Babe Ruth – 1916 Sporting News
Babe Ruth made our list a second time, of course. The King of Crash debuted with the Boston Red Sox in 1914 and stayed with them until 1920 when he moved to the New York Yankees. He won seven World Series championships, was MVP of 1923, was elected to both the All-Star Game and the Hall of Fame, and was inducted into both.
Ruth was one of the original five Hall of Famers, and for a good reason. His skill was almost beyond comprehension, and spectators were enthralled. Until Hank Aaron surpassed him in 1974, he held the all-time home run record. Joe Dungan once remarked about Ruth, “To comprehend him, you must first accept this: He wasn’t human.” This Sporting News card sold for $717,000 in 2016.
