Are Windmills Safe for Nature?

November 20, 2022 by Dave Brooks

Wind turbines have been around for centuries, and their popularity is on the rise as we search for new, renewable sources of energy. But are windmills safe for nature? Some people say that they are not, and that they are responsible for a number of bird deaths every year. Let’s take a look at the evidence and find out.

The most common argument against wind turbines is that they are responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of birds every year. While it’s true that some bird deaths have been linked to wind turbines, the numbers are actually quite small when compared to other causes. It’s estimated that less than 0.3% of all bird-related deaths in the United States are caused by wind turbines. In comparison, cats kill an estimated 2 billion birds annually!

Wind turbine blades also move relatively slowly and aren’t as big a hazard to birds as they might appear at first glance. Studies show that most bird strikes occur at high speeds – when a bird flies directly into the side or leading edge of a blade – not when coming up underneath it.

In addition to being relatively safe for birds, wind turbines can also help reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases. Wind is a renewable energy source that produces no air pollution or other environmental contaminants. It’s estimated that wind turbines could generate up to 20% of the world’s electricity by 2030 – which would help us move toward a more sustainable future.

Finally, wind turbines are relatively low impact when compared to other forms of energy production such as coal and natural gas. While there will always be some disruption when building new infrastructure, it’s generally minimal and localized when compared to the effects these other energy sources have on local ecosystems and wildlife.

Overall, while it’s important to consider all potential impacts before investing in any form of energy production, it appears that wind turbines can be relatively safe for nature when compared to other forms of energy production. By taking steps to minimize the impact on birds, and investing in renewable sources of energy like wind, we can move toward a more sustainable future.
