Memorial Day is just around the corner and with it comes the plan to gather with family and friends. Most people enjoy a nice backyard BBQ on Memorial Day, while others travel to cemeteries to remember long-lost relatives who fought for the country.
Whatever you plan on doing this year for Memorial Day, wanted to share some eco-friendly options for you to enjoy this special annual holiday.
Invite Local Family and Friends
Consider hosting this Memorial Day party only for people who live within walking or biking distance. This will cut down on traffic and pollution that can go into the air from too many people driving on this holiday.
Use Farmer’s Market Products
Go to the local farms in your area to gather veggies and fruits to use as part of your entrée during your Memorial Day party. If you’re lucky, you can even grab fresh meat from a local farm to support the local farmers and be more eco-friendly with your food options this year.
Use Natural Gas
See if you can use natural gas to grill your food for this year’s Memorial Day party. We’re not sure natural gas is available everywhere, so just call around to see if this eco-friendly idea is a valid option to use in your region.
Use Washable Plates and Cups
Dish the paper plates or plastic cups and use the washable options. Sure this will create some more dishes for you, but you can wash them using an energy-efficient dishwasher. This will keep the amount of trash down so that you’re doing one small part to host an eco-friendly Memorial Day party.
Head to a National Park
Another way to enjoy Memorial Day in a more eco-friendly way is to take a trip to a local National Park. Spend the day at the park grilling or hiking to enjoy the scenery and nature. This is a fabulous way to help your kids learn more about our parks and how they help our environment, too!
Plant a Tree
Lastly, you can plant a tree when you celebrate Memorial Day with family and friends. Have each family member bring over a tree that you’ll transplant into your back yard, or at a local park with permission from the town. This is a great way to protect Earth and be more eco-friendly on Memorial Day.
These are just some fun ideas we had to help you be more eco-friendly this year with your Memorial Day parties. We hope that our list has inspired you to do something fun and creative this year on the annual holiday in May.
