#36: Wrestler by Day, Saint by Night
Sergio Gutiérrez Benítez, better known by his wrestling persona “Fray Tormenta,” is a remarkable figure who has left an indelible mark through his unconventional path of service. A Mexican Catholic priest, Fray Tormenta became widely recognized for his dual life as a luchador, or wrestler, donning a mask and cape in the ring. However, his wrestling pursuits weren’t driven by fame or personal glory; instead, they were a means to support the orphanage he ran in Texcoco, Mexico.
Using the proceeds from his wrestling matches, he provided resources and care for local orphaned children. His selfless dedication to both his religious vocation and the welfare of the underprivileged inspired the 2006 film Nacho Libre, where Jack Black portrayed a character loosely based on him. Fray Tormenta’s story is a testament to the extraordinary ways in which individuals can make a positive impact in the lives of others, transcending societal norms and expectations.
