The Benefits of Beavers

May 11, 2021 by Brandy

Have you ever been walking around a bog or local pond to see beavers building their dams? Beavers play an important role in our world, and today we’re sharing the benefits of beavers so you can learn more about these amazing creatures.

Whether you’ve seen a beaver, or not, we’re confident that these lists of benefits of beavers in our world will inspire you to ensure the local beavers remain protected.

Create Wetlands

Beavers create wetlands with their ability to stop the flow of water from one water source to another area. This pool of water creates wetlands which provide homes to much wildlife out there in the forests.

Increase Plant Diversity

Any area that’s known to have beavers has shown a 33% increase in plant diversity in the area. This means beavers provide wetlands a chance to grow new plants that are helpful to our environment and other wildlife that eat these plants in the area.

Improve Water Quality

Since beavers build dams that slow the water running through rivers, it helps the purifying plants stay and grow healthier. This helps improve the water quality of the water around a beavers’ dam.

Help Trout and Salmon

The beaver dams help provide a habitat for salmon and trout to breed. This helps increase the growth of these two fish types that are scarcely found due to the increasing reduction in water formations that allow these species to breed and thrive.

Store Water

When we’re in a drought, the dams help protect and store water. This is a fantastic thing for our wildlife and water sources! The ability to dam up a flowing stream with trees and sticks is a fabulous way to protect our environment against droughts.

Minimize Flood Risk

Shockingly, the dams that beavers build help minimize flood risks. Before researching this we had thought for sure that the dams would create a backup of water and flood the area. This is not true. Beavers are helping minimize the risk of flooding in various areas when they appear to build their homes.

The beavers in our world play a key part in helping wildlife, plant life, and fish thrive! As you can see from the above benefits of beavers, these furry creatures with oily skin help our world in more ways than one.

The next time you’re out there in the forest or a local bog and see a beaver dam, remember that they’re doing their part to help our world stay safe, healthy, and thriving!
