Rules are a basic part of society, right? They exist to keep us safe and set norms of expected behavior from others. Most rules are pretty reasonable and predictable, but occasionally, we come across one that’s out of the left field. We’ve all encountered rules that are so oddly specific that we can’t help but wonder what (or who) happened to have caused such a stipulation. These rules are so niche that they go beyond common sense. Here are some of the Internet’s weirdest rules that will make you wonder, “What happened here?”
#1: Squirrel Vendetta
We can all admit that squirrels are pretty cute. But they can also be evil. At least, according to Keith. Poor Keith is a public library employee who has had enough of the local squirrels terrorizing him during his lunch break. Keith and his colleagues have taken preventative measures against the local squirrels by installing this oddly specific sign at the book drop.

Any library patron who comes to drop off a book must announce themselves when opening the book drop. This weird rule lets Keith know if the book drop is being opened by a normal human or a menacing squirrel intent on grabbing his delicious sandwich. We’re stunned that the squirrels learned how to open this metal contraption. We don’t blame Keith for trying to protect himself from his animal enemies.
