What Do We Know About the Universe?

April 6, 2021 by Sarah Barber

There is much we don’t know about the universe, but we do know quite a bit. Over the years scientists have spent days, months, and years learning more about the solar system. The universe is such a large and expansive place that there’s no way we can learn everything during a lifetime, but we can share things we know about the universe as of this moment.

Today we’re sharing what we know about the universe to help lend some excitement and intrigue about outer space. This is great knowledge to share with your family to help them learn more about the world around us.

What does universe mean?

The universe refers to all of the space around us. This includes the Milky Way, the solar system, existing matter, known galaxies, and superstructures. In terms of what we define as the universe today is essentially all things about time, matter, and energy along with the fundamental forces that bind them.

Believe there’s an End

Most people believe that the universe was created and therefore does have an end. We don’t know when that end will arrive, but we’ve learned much about other planets and regions in space to know that nothing lasts forever.

Four Elements

Around the 5th Century, we learned that the universe is composed of four elements. These elements are earth, air, water, and fire. A Greek philosopher came along later and stated that we were wrong. This person believed that the universe was composed of invisible particles that we know today as atoms.

We Have a Model

At some point between the 2nd millennium BCE and 2nd Century CE, we learned more about the location of Earth in relation to the rest of the solar system. A model was created to show where each planet is located in relation to the sun at some point and that’s what we go by today!

It’s Not Unique

This revelation occurred when we found the Milky Way. This discovery made us realize that our galaxy isn’t alone and isn’t unique. The telescope allowed us to start seeing our solar system differently and we grew to realize there’s a vast area out there that could include other galaxies and solar systems.

Theory of Gravity

Another thing we know about the universe is the concept of gravity. In 1687 Newton’s Three Laws of Motion were developed, thus allowing humans to learn more about gravity in the solar system. These theories explain the relation of objects and energy as well as motion.

These are just some of the things we know about the universe that we just had to share with you today! We hope that you learned something new to share with your friends and family when you gather together again. These facts can surely make for a fun trivia night with friends.
