#10: A New Type of Barbie Doll
There is no denying that as wonderful and revolutionary as Barbie is, she also has some flaws… When it comes to Barbie’s appearance, she has always fit one very specific mold of a person. Many people had something to say about the fact that there was only one type of Barbie for a long time, so even though it was a little late, the people at Mattel made some changes.
In 1980, toy makers Mattel finally released their African American Barbie and Ken dolls to the public. The long-awaited release finally made little African American boys and girls feel like they were finally being represented in the fabric of society. Small steps such as these can make a huge difference to the psyche of young boys and girls.
