Donning a deceptive cloak of nature, kiwis are more than what they seem. Originating as delicate blossoms, they metamorphose into the tantalizingly sweet treat we relish. Surprisingly, their botanical classification doesn’t align with our common perception – kiwis are not fruits, but rather, they’re classified as berries due to their unique growth process.
Often referred to as “Chinese Gooseberries”, these delectable fruits caught the eye of the Western world during the tumultuous times of World War II. Their unique taste quickly captivated the palate of Americans, leading to the establishment of kiwis as a staple export to the sunny state of California in the post-war period.
