#10: Gong farmers
This list has some pretty strange jobs, but this must be the worst one. If you think your job stinks, this one literally does. Did you guess it yet? Gong farmers’ job was to clean waste and human excrement from public outhouses and cesspits. For obvious reasons, mainly sanitary and hygiene-related, gong farmers were only allowed to work at night.
Gong farmers were popular from the 15th to the 17th century, mostly in England. Still, as sewage disposal systems emerged and mechanical tools for this task were invented, gong farmers were no longer necessary. It wasn’t all bad, though: since their job was so off-putting, the gong farmers were well rewarded for doing the task no one else wanted.
