The Navy’s Newest Recruit
Enrolling in this unique program came with a distinctive rhythm for Armstrong. After immersing himself in two years of college, he committed to a couple of years honing his flying skills, followed by a year of airborne duty in the U.S. Navy. This immersive experience was to be followed by a return to the academic realm to complete his studies.
The military chapter of Armstrong’s journey commenced in early 1949, as he touched down at Florida’s Pensacola Naval Air Station, where the skies would become his classroom and his cockpit his second home.
