Mandatory Annual Waistline Measurements
The nation that gave us sumo wrestling has a law against people being overweight? It may sound surprising, but it actually makes sense. Japan seems to embrace the idea that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” The 2008 Metabo Law requires annual waist measurements for every citizen aged 40 to 75. The set limits are 33 inches for men and 35 inches for women.
If your waist measurement surpasses these limits, you’ll be directed to seek medical help for weight loss. The rationale behind this is, of course, that maintaining a slender physique contributes to overall health and helps reduce healthcare costs for the country.
