Women Are Banned From Climbing Mount Ōmine
Japan is globally recognized for its stunning mountain ranges, with the most famous and tallest being Mount Fuji. In this context, we’d like to introduce you to Mount Ōmine. As part of a scenic national park, the mountain serves as the headquarters for a mystical sect of Japanese Buddhism. Consequently, besides being a major tourist attraction, it also serves as an active site for religious pilgrimage.
These dual purposes have created a conflict, as women are prohibited from ascending Mount Ōmine. The exact reason has been lost to history, but it’s theorized that it may be related to notions of impurity.
