Putting Ice Cream in Mailboxes Is Illegal
It might seem like an oddly specific law, but let’s hear Japan out – it does make some sense. Like many laws, it originated from someone doing something foolish, prompting the government to intervene to prevent a recurrence. In 2006, a disgruntled mailman placed chocolate ice cream inside someone’s mailbox, causing it to naturally melt and create a messy situation.
Japanese authorities, presumably after recovering from the shock, promptly enacted a law prohibiting such actions. The penalty for this offense? It could result in up to five years in prison or a fine of $4,800.
