Anyone who had a Gameboy was pretty cool in the 1990s, but if you wanted to rise to super-cool status, you had to have a Gameboy Color. And if you wanted to elevate to near-godlike coolness, you had to have all of the accessories for your Gameboy Color, especially a light that would illuminate your non-backlit screen in the dark.

Although Gameboy Color games were off the hook, the only games we recall playing were Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow. That’s probably what started us down the line of Pokémon fandom in junior high school. We only spent around $500 on a card collection before quitting the fandom cold-turkey.
