Photos That Made Us Feel Like Tiny Specs of Dust

King Alfred’s Tower is located on Kingsettle Hill in Somerset, England. Built in 1772, it’s 161 feet tall. As far as large objects go, this one isn’t as enormous as most, but it’s still fear-inspiring for both megalophobia and acrophobes. It was commissioned as a monument to the end of The Seven Year War by Henry Hoare the Second.

You’ll notice in recent pictures that it’s had some extensive work done since a plane crashed into it in 1944. You can only reach the top by climbing 205 steps within a spiral staircase in one of the columns. It’s open to the public on weekends, from 12:00 to 4:00 pm, and requires only a short drive from Stourhead, three miles away.
