#1: Yay to the Whale
In a heartening conservation success story, the gray whale population in California has experienced a remarkable surge, with a 20% increase in just one year. According to the 2021-2022 census, the overall population grew by 238, marking a significant rise in numbers. The Ojo de Liebre Lagoon alone recorded an impressive count of 1,246 whales, while an additional 118 were spotted in San Ignacio.
Notably, among the counted whales, 491 were newborn calves, offering researchers a glimpse of optimism for the species’ future. This population boost shows the importance of conservation efforts and the potential for recovery when ecosystems are protected, and human activities are managed sustainably, serving as a beacon of hope for the preservation of these magnificent marine mammals.
