#6: Inclusivity in the Medical World
Malone Mukwende, a remarkable 20-year-old medical student at St. George’s, University of London, has taken a significant step towards addressing a long-standing issue in healthcare. Recognizing the lack of teaching materials and resources for healthcare professionals on how diseases and symptoms manifest on Black and Brown skin tones, he co-created a groundbreaking handbook that features side-by-side images comparing symptoms on fair skin to those on darker skin tones.
This initiative stemmed from his personal experience as a student and his realization that certain symptoms would not present the same way on his own skin as they would on fair skin. Mukwende’s word offers a valuable resource to medical professionals and fosters a more equitable and informed healthcare system. It’s an example of the power of individual determination to drive positive change in the medical field.
