#6: Respect Is Earned, Not Given
This next one raises an interesting question. In many cultures, age is often met with an automatic assumption of respect and wisdom. However, this person asserts that while you should always default to a respectful tone when talking to others, age alone is not a marker or indicator of respect. Respect is a two-way street – someone must be respectful to receive the same treatment.
Elderly people may have lived longer than others, but age and experience alone aren’t an excuse to treat others differently. To be given respect, someone should utilize mutual kindness, consideration, and understanding. It’s just how it should be, and it helps everyone (regardless of age) feel valued and heard.
