Drawing Stocking Lines, 1945
People will go to great lengths for the sake of fashion. Women in the United States improvised in some kind of silly way during WWII. The war led to shortages of a lot of materials and goods, including nylon, which was used to make stockings. This was a problem since a woman leaving her house without wearing stockings was out of the question.
What did they do? They got creative! Without knowing the reason behind this photograph, it looks quite odd. This photo, taken in 1945, shows a woman drawing lines onto her friend’s legs to create the illusion of stockings. Women used ink, tea, and even gravy to draw on stocking lines and keep up appearances.
