#1: Horne’s
Another Southern-style restaurant, Horne’s, was founded in 1948 and headquartered in Bayard, Florida. It peaked at more than sixty locations, and Bob I. Horne founded it. Horne’s would later be bought by (then called Greyhound Corporation). Horne’s benefitted from the highway system.
The restaurant locations were located along major highways, catering to truckers and families who were traveling. The locations were open 24/7, and often, the restaurants offered lodging and a hot meal. Attached to Horne’s Restaurants were Texaco gas stations, ice cream stands, and gift shops. This made it somewhat of a “one-stop shop” for travelers.
