#4: Huyler’s
John S. Huyler, a trustee at Syracuse University, founded this candy and restaurant chain in New York City. At one point, the metro chain was the largest and most famous chocolatier in the United States. Huyler entered the candy business as a teenager while working at his father’s ice cream shop.

Huyler began making soft molasses and selling it from his dad’s shop. When he had enough money saved, he opened a candy store, and people would come to watch the candy being pulled in the window. Milton S. Hershey worked at Huyler’s in the late 1800s before founding his eponymous candy company.
