#30: Manganaro’s
Manganaro’s Grosseria Italiana is one of the very few businesses that can claim to have operated in three different centuries. Founded in 1893 by Ernest Petrucci, the Italian market and deli served generations of loyal customers from its familiar Ninth Avenue spot in Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen.

Longevity is one thing, but Manganaro’s is also partly responsible for introducing Americans to arguably the bravest sandwich you can find: Hero. Manganaro’s closed up shop in 2012 when the family decided 119 years was long enough, thus signaling the end of one of the remaining businesses that predate the Model A.
