#29: What Are We Worshipping Here?
This church in Michigan, St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, was designed by world-renowned architect Marcel Breuer. He specifically designed the columns to create an optical illusion of movement as you walk through the church. It’s meant to feel oppressive, as it represents the way religion is an integral part of Catholics’ lives.
From the outside, the building appears rather homely, but the inside is something from nightmares. It cost over $1 million to build in the 1960s, and he designed it while working on the Whitney Museum of American Art located in New York City. If you’re interested in seeing more, a virtual tour is available online. Just a warning, it’s not any less creepy.
