#17: What’s the Point?
When the word “abandoned” is attached to a building, it immediately becomes spooky! This hotel, dubbed “The Hotel of Doom,” is 100% abandoned, as construction was forced on hold in 1989 and never restarted. It’s located in North Korea and was initially designed as a burgeoning mecca for international travelers. However, the leading investors were the Soviet Union, and once they collapsed, the work stopped.
This building, at twice the height of the Egyptian pyramids, holds the world record for largest abandoned structure. In 2008, an Egyptian company decided to purchase and proceed with the original plans, but the inside was completely unfinished and required billions of dollars to meet standards. It was abandoned yet again after a quick facelift.
