#15: Katherine Switzer Running the Boston Marathon, 1972
Nowadays, it seems ridiculous to think that people of all genders wouldn’t be able to run in the same marathon competitions. Back in the 1960s, it was a whole other story. Women were prohibited from running in the Boston Marathon up until 1972. Katherine Switzer, though, became the first woman to run the Boston Marathon in 1967.

How did she pull it off? Well, she registered for the marathon with just her initials, K.V. Switzer, and snuck onto the course wearing baggy clothing so she wouldn’t draw attention. One of the marathon organizers noticed, though, and tried physically pushing her off the track! A photographer captured this historic moment, and his now outdated beliefs were caught forever on film.
