#4: Elizabeth Eckford, Part of Little Rock Nine, 1957
This photo of 15-year-old Elizabeth Eckford walking to school is probably very recognizable to most Americans. This photograph captures the moment that Elizabeth, a member of the Little Rock Nine, walked alone to her first day at Little Rock Central High School. Brown v. Board of Education ruled that racial segregation in schools was unconstitutional in 1954.
As a result, Elizabeth and eight other Black students were admitted into Little Rock Central. We can only imagine the bravery it took her to walk alone to school with this group of people around her. This photo was taken in 1957, and it’s really not as long ago as we think. Elizabeth Eckford is still alive and published her autobiography in 2018.
