The feeling of a triumphant victory is unlike any other. We can’t imagine how good it felt for this man to let out his true feelings after German soldiers were captured in his neighborhood. This older French gentleman was photographed making a defiant hand gesture to the two German soldiers in 1944, and we can’t say we wouldn’t do the same.

These two soldiers belonged to a division that became infamous for acts of violence during the war. While we don’t know their individual stories, knowing the history of WWII makes this photograph feel like a small victory and an act of defiance.
