#7: Wide Open Spaces
I don’t mean to sound like the Dixie Chicks, but we here in America are accustomed to wide open spaces—one might even say, room to make a big mistake. I live in a well-populated area, but even so, the nearest places that could be considered “major cities” are 6 to 10 hours away by car. So, yes, an hour’s drive is still a “short trip” to many Americans.
It was shocking when I realized that the island of Great Britain is the size of my home state, and that the state of Texas is nearly twice the size of Germany. In many parts of world, traveling 6 to 10 hours by car would get you three countries over, not just to the next major city.
