In Pixar’s movie Up, the main character, Carl, refuses to sell his beloved home to greedy real estate developers and eventually flies off in his house with a bunch of balloons. Well, there is a real-life folk hero in Seattle who held onto their home in a very similar way. Edith Macefield refused to sell her family home despite new developments being built around her house.
Edith, born in 1921, lived in the same home her parents had lived in and refused to sell it despite being offered up to $1 million. She wished to live the rest of her life in her 108-year-old farmhouse, and that wish came true. The developers couldn’t win, and Edith passed away peacefully at home at the age of 86 in 2008.
