Spotify doesn’t pay the bills
You’ve probably heard of artists receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars for performing on stage. While this is true, this doesn’t take into account the expenses they incur to pay their crew, hairstylists, backup dancers, and a million other things we wouldn’t know the half of. And all those millions of streams of Spotify aren’t adding much to their bank account either.
A majority of a musician’s earnings come from selling merchandise. Whether you’re a rising indie group or The Foo Fighters, your merchandise is what ends up paying the bills. It might not have been like that in a few decades ago, but in today’s music industry where millions of musicians are trying to make a name of themselves, that’s just the reality.
