The Dingo Fence
Dingoes may look like dogs but they’re more wolf than dogs. Evidence suggests that the current population of dingoes are descendants of Asian dingoes who were introduced to the continent 3000 to 4000 years ago. Unlike their distant cousins, dingoes are considered to be a pest especially to sheep owners who now have “guard donkeys” to protect their livestock.
In fact, some locals became so desperate that they built a 5614 km long fence to keep dingoes out of the south-east part of the continent where livestock graze. It was built in the 1880s by State governments and until 1980 was 8614 kilometers long. Although it has been shortened, it still remains the world’s longest fence.
