We often think members of royalty live charmed, perfect lives. Movies, books, and tabloids all help create the idea of the princess getting swept off her feet by a charming prince, only to live happily ever after. In reality, royal marriages are just as messy and complicated as our own relationships, if not more so. Royals are humans too, and just because they live in extraordinary circumstances doesn’t mean they never experience heartbreak and loss. We’ve put together some facts and moments in royal history that aren’t so perfect and show the human side of royal marriages. We have everything from stolen love letters to a fake duel. Being a monarch is hardly ever easy, but it sure is interesting.
24 Things I Hate About You
If you’ve seen The Crown, you already know that there is drama and unhappy relationships galore in the modern British royal family. While the show is definitely exaggerated, there are some elements of truth. Princess Margaret and photographer Antony Armstrong-Jones are known to have had a notoriously unhappy relationship.
The stories surrounding their dislike of each other are legendary, and unfortunately, it seems like they didn’t treat each other with the respect they both deserved. Armstrong-Jones is known to have left Margaret “hate notes” to remind her of all the things he disliked about her. One note was allegedly titled “Twenty-Four Reasons Why I Hate You.” Margaret reflected to a friend that she couldn’t “think of twenty-four reasons to hate anybody.” We agree, Margaret.
