Ignore the Haters
Here we have a rare royal marriage that actually seemed to be based on love! It wasn’t without its challenges, though. King Charles II of England married Catherine of Braganza in 1662. Catherine was the daughter of King John IV of Portugal, and her Catholic faith made her wildly unpopular with her Church of England subjects. Despite the national hatred of Catherine, she and Charles stuck together until his death in 1685.
Catherine faced a lot of challenges during her time as Queen of England. Many people in court and in politics tried to ruin her reputation with incredibly false rumors. At one point she was accused of taking a man’s life and she was falsely accused of trying to poison the king. Although Catherine was unable to give birth to an heir, she introduced tea-drinking to England. She definitely left her mark on English culture, whether her subjects liked it or not!
