Don’t Mess with Eleanor of Aquitaine
King Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine were English power players in the 12th century. The story goes that King Henry and Eleanor were so in love, even marriage to another man couldn’t keep them apart. Eleanor was married to the king of France but was able to get an annulment in order to marry Henry. They were quickly married and had eight children together. Things were not all roses and butterflies, though.
Henry began entertaining other women outside of their relationship, and the two became estranged and distant. This was probably part of the reason that Eleanor would go on to support her son’s revolt against his own father for the throne. Eleanor was imprisoned in 1173, but was later released and continued to play a prominent role in the politics of the time.
