Long Time to Wait
Margaret Tudor was another one of King Henry VIII’s sisters, so whoever she took as a husband would play an important role in English politics. Her first marriage was to James IV of Scotland, which helped form the unification of England and Scotland about 100 years later. It was considered a successful marriage for the time, but James IV unfortunately died in battle. Her next marriage failed to be as happy.
Margaret married nobleman Archibald Douglas in secret, without her brother Henry’s knowledge (just like Mary did!). Douglas was an ally to the crown, so when Margaret wanted a divorce two years later, the king denied this request. Poor Margaret had to deal with Douglas supporting a mistress with HER money, and she had to wait a whole 13 years before getting a divorce!
