Scandal Repeats Itself
The marriage of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle caused quite a stir in 2018. Not only was Queen Elizabeth’s grandson marrying an American, but a divorcée on top of that! While a lot of people were clutching their pearls, many forgot that Harry isn’t the first royal to be in this situation. King Edward VII married an American woman, and it changed the history of the monarchy forever.
When Edward decided to marry the American divorcée Wallis Simpson, he abdicated his throne. Elizabeth’s father, George VI, then became king and set Elizabeth up as next in line for the throne. Even though they seem similar, we can’t compare the marriage of Harry and Meghan too closely to Edward’s. It was a different time with different social expectations.
