Age is But A Number
Mary Tudor was a sister of King Henry VIII, and she didn’t have the best of luck in the marriage department. When Mary was 18, she was betrothed to Charles of House Habsburg, who would go on to become ruler of the Holy Roman Empire. Charles, who was only 13 at the time of their betrothal, broke off the engagement because he thought Mary was “too old.” We know things were different back then, but sheesh!
Mary was soon married off to the French King Louis XII (who was 34 years older than Mary, by the way). Three months later King Louis died. The death of her first husband might have been a blessing in disguise, though, because she was able to marry someone she actually liked. She secretly married Charles Brandon, but when her brother found out he was NOT happy. He eventually got over it, let them stay married, and made them pay a fine.
