While Playing in a Tougher Era
NBA fans will testify that the 1980s and 90s were a lot tougher than the league is today. Now, you can get technical fouls just by throwing the ball a bit too hard at the refs. Just as JJ Redick and he’ll tell you how he got ejected for doing this. But during the golden years of the NBA, it was a completely different league.

Today, the league focuses more heavily on offense, which is why it’s not uncommon for teams to score over 100 points per game. Back then, defensive players were several times better. Being the leading scorer, league MVP, finals MVP, and six-time champ from an era where rough-housing was a way of life means something.
