Easter Eggs Waiting to Be Found in Thrillers

August 3, 2010 by Regina Clarke

Midsommar

If you haven’t heard of Ari Aster’s Midsommar, then you kind of need to go watch it… like, right now. Set in Sweden, a group of friends attends what they presume to be a festival of a lifetime, that occurs every 90 years. Terri, the protagonist’s sister, killed both herself and her parents by filling their family home with carbon monoxide. This trauma is what guides Dani, the protagonist throughout the film.

Being nearly impossible to cope with such trauma, Aster leaves Easter eggs throughout the whole film. Throughout the film, many images of ghosts appear, which can definitely be scary, but the more frightening scenes happen towards the end. Just imagine, an eerily peaceful scene of people dressed in all white, partaking in a celebratory tradition, and there it is – her sister’s face, hidden in the mountainscape with a pipe attached to her mouth. Talk about trauma…
