Chiyono Hasegawa
Chiyono was considered a respected figure during her time and in September 2008, Chiyono (then 111 years old) and her then 61-year-old grandson were visited by the governor of Saga Prefecture, Governor Furukawa, for Senior Citizen’s Day. Since the death of Kama Chinen on 2 May 2010, she became the oldest verified person in Japan around her death.

Furthermore, she was also known as the second oldest person living in the world after US Besse Cooper. In addition, at the time of her death, at the age of 115 years 12 days, Chiyono Hasegawa was recorded as the oldest verified person in Asia in 2011. She died on 2 December 2011 of natural causes.
