Drysalter
More than anything else, the names of the professions in the past were quite funny, as they had no mystery or sophistication whatsoever. The drysalter was a vendor who supplied a range of dry chemicals and salt. Among other things, the drysalter sold glue, varnish and dry salted products, such as cooking salt, dry salted meat or pickles.
The term “drysalter” was popular mostly in the UK during the late 17th and 18th centuries. It almost seems as if any profession had its own, specific name that described exactly what the person was doing. Basically, the drysalter in the 18th century was a store clerk or a vendor, but the name stuck from the previous use of the term.
