Linotype Operators
Linotype was a machine used for printing and typing, which was used by newspapers to press down the articles onto paper. The linotype operators, naturally, were the people who operated the heavy machines, a duty that required skill and patience. However, it was a rewarding job, much like working in a newspaper today.
The linotype was immensely popular during the fifties and sixties, but it slowly lost its value during the seventies, and during the eighties, the machine was put out of use entirely – when it was replaced by a new technique and equipment, the phototypesetting. That’s how linotype operators lost their jobs, but they probably wound up finding other positions in the newspaper.
